What’s the Difference Between Klopp and Slot at Liverpool? Here’s Gakpo’s Explanation

Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo revealed the differences between Jurgen Klopp and the Reds’ new coach, Arne Slot.

Klopp surprisingly decided to leave Liverpool in the summer of 2024. Even though he had just successfully revitalized the Reds’ midfield.

A number of coaching candidates had emerged in the media. But in the end Slot was chosen to replace Klopp at Anfield.

Liverpool itself has started its journey with Slot in the 2024/2025 season. In the pre-season they continued to win and continued in the first match of the 2024/2025 Premier League against Ipswich Town.

Good Impression

Arne Slot himself has impressed fans with Liverpool’s performance so far. Cody Gakpo also said the same thing was felt by the Reds players even though he made many changes compared to the Jurgen Klopp era.

“A lot has changed compared to Klopp, but he made a very good impression. It’s not necessarily better or worse, but in general it’s changed,” he told Sport Nieuws, via Goal.

“Last season it was more about counter-attacks, but that was just an advantage. We will soon master both systems,” Gakpo added.

Slot Characters

Cody Gakpo then tried to reveal Arne Slot’s character. He said that Slot is a coach who likes to speak frankly and that is different from Jurgen Klopp who always defends his players in front of the media.

This was already seen when he criticized Jarell Quansah’s game in the match against Ipswich Town. However, Gakpo emphasized that this character will actually help the players improve their performance.

“He (Slot) is very honest and straightforward, which is beneficial for the players. Then you always know where you stand,” he explained.

Hope Liverpool Continue to Achieve Positive Results

As mentioned earlier, Liverpool had a great pre-season. They then won against Ipswich Town in the opening match of the 2024/2025 Premier League.

Cody Gakpo also hopes that Liverpool can continue to achieve positive results throughout the season. Thus the chance to win the title will be wide open.

“The games in preparation were good straight away and we won the first game against Ipswich as well. Then you immediately get more points within the club and you are in. If we continue like this we can have a great year,” he said.
