Virgil van Dijk’s Future at Liverpool Still Gray Despite Not Being Offered a Contract Extension

Until now, there has been no contract offer for Virgil van Dijk as the Liverpool captain enters the final season of his contract with the Merseyside club.

Liverpool were convincing as they beat Spanish side Sevilla 4-1 in their final pre-season game at Anfield on Sunday (11/8/2024) evening WIB.

Luis Diaz scored twice while Diogo Jota and youngster Trey Nyoni also got on the scoresheet to make it four wins from four in front of their home crowd and usher in the Arne Slot era.

It was Van Dijk’s first minutes under Slot’s tutelage after the Dutchman returned from a three-week break following Euro 2024. And the player says there has been no movement yet on signing a new contract at the club.

Gray Future

Asked about the issue, Van Dijk looked relaxed and laughed a little because the question was one he was asked almost every week during the competition season.

“There is no change at the moment,” Van Dijk said.

It is a worrying issue for Liverpool and new sporting director Richard Hughes, who is yet to make a first-team signing since joining from Bournemouth and officially starting his role at the Merseyside club in June.

Not Only Van Dijk

What is even more worrying is that not only is Van Dijk’s future still unknown, Liverpool stars Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold also only have 11 months left on their current contracts.

That means that without intervention, three of Liverpool’s prized assets will not be at the club next year.

Praise Slots

Van Dijk said in the spring that he wanted to see what the situation was like under the new coaching regime before committing his future to the club and, when asked about his first impressions of Slot, he praised the coach.

“So far so good,” said Van Dijk.

“Obviously we’ve done a lot of work on the training ground both tactically and physically. It was the last big test before we start with the real games and I feel we’re ready for that.

“Hopefully we can show that as well because going there on Saturday, it will be very difficult.”
