Liverpool legend Graeme Souness commented on Manchester United’s decision to recruit Matthijs De Ligt. He doubts De Ligt can achieve success while playing in the Premier League.
Manchester United have already signed Leny Yoro in the summer transfer window. However, the Red Devils are still known to want to bring in a new center-back.
According to reports, Manchester United has reportedly succeeded in recruiting Matthijs De Ligt from Bayern Munich. The Red Devils reportedly paid a high price for De Ligt’s transfer.
Manchester United will pay De Ligt 45 million euros plus add-ons. The Dutchman is expected to overcome the Red Devils’ fragile defense last season.
Doubt De Ligt
However, Souness seems unsure about Matthijs de Ligt. Because, the 24-year-old footballer is only a reserve at his current club.
“He (Erik Ten Hag) knew what he was going to get from the other players he got from Ajax and I don’t think anyone was cheering for joy and saying how great they were,” Souness told talkSPORT .
“I have doubts about De Ligt, sorry. He was not in the national team at the Euros, he was just a reserve player.
“If you look at his profile, he’s played at two big football clubs. Clubs like that don’t usually like to sell players, they keep their best players. That alone tells a story.”
Do not develop
Souness sees De Ligt not developing since his emergence at Ajax Amsterdam. Therefore, Souness is not sure that De Ligt can shine with Manchester United.
“He was a star when he was young, but has he developed since then? I’m not sure he’s what Manchester United need at the moment,” he added.
“They obviously need a centre-back because Jonny Evans has played a lot of games, he’s 36. But is De Ligt the man?
“When I look at him, I see a light centre-back. Is there a queue of other teams wanting to buy him? I don’t think so.”
