The Serie A has not started yet, but Gianluca Scamacca has suffered an unfortunate fate . Atalanta confirmed that the player has injured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee.

Scamacca was substituted in the 50th minute of Atalanta’s 4-1 friendly defeat to Parma, La Dea’s final pre-season game before they face Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on August 14.

The Italian enjoyed a fine season on his return to Serie A in 2023/24, following a frustrating year with West Ham.

Scamacca scored 19 goals and provided eight assists last season, as Atalanta finished fourth in Serie A and won the Europa League.

Direct Operation

On Monday (5/8/2024) local time, Atalanta released an official statement that Scamacca underwent surgery at the Villa Stuart clinic in Rome, performed by Professor Mariani.

“Following a clinical consultation with Professor Pierpaolo Mariani at the Villa Stuart Clinic in Rome, Gianluca Scamacca underwent diagnostic tests which revealed a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee,” the club said in a statement.

“This afternoon, Monday, August 5, the footballer will undergo arthroscopic surgery. Professor Mariani himself will perform the operation.”

Threatened with Long Absence

The player will now begin rehabilitation, but this type of injury usually requires at least six months out.

Scamacca took to his personal X account to express his disappointment over the injury.

“After a difficult summer, I can’t wait to return to Bergamo to dedicate myself to what I love most,” wrote Scamacca.

“Unfortunately yesterday, I suffered a season-ending knee injury. As you can imagine, I was shocked, devastated and couldn’t believe it.

“But it’s in my DNA to come back and be stronger. That’s what I plan to do.”

Find a Replacement

Meanwhile, Atalanta looks set to look for a replacement by planning to sign Mateo Retegui from Genoa to replace the injured Scamacca.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, La Dea management is currently drafting a proposal to send to Genoa to bring in Retegui, who played with the Italian national team at Euro 2024.

In addition to Retegui, Atalanta are eyeing 19-year-old Orri Oskarsson. However, bringing in the player will not come cheap.

The player has just signed a new contract with FC Copenhagen and that makes the asking price at 20 million euros, but Girona have also shown interest.
