BRI Liga 1: VAR Mobile is an Early Milestone in the Progress of Indonesian Football

BRI Liga 1: VAR Mobile is an Early Milestone in the Progress of Indonesian Football

PSSI General Chair, Erick Thohir, fulfilled his promise to implement video assistant referee (VAR) technology in the continuation of the 2023/2024 BRI Liga 1 competition.

Even though it is ‘late’ from the specified schedule, this step should be appreciated. Previously, it was projected that VAR would start being used in the second round of this season.

For one reason or another, the debut of VAR can only be enjoyed in the match between Bali United and Persib Bandung, (14/5/2024). The use of this technology will continue to be used until the final match of the Champions Series round.

PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) Media & Communications Manager, Hanif Marjuni, said this step was an early milestone in the revival of national football.

“The remaining eight matches are our preparation for next season. All matches use VAR technology ,” he said to the media crew at Gelora Bangkalan (15/5/2024).

Stadium Infrastructure PR

However, Hanif admits that there is a lot of work that must be completed before entering the full use phase. One of them is stadium infrastructure.

Of the number of stadiums used by BRI Liga 1 2023/24 contestants, only three venues were declared suitable, namely Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium (Surabaya), Manahan Stadium (Solo) and Captain I Wayan Dipta Stadium (Gianyar).

“As long as it is not possible for the rest, VAR Mobile will be used. In total to date, we have 12 VAR cars,” he said.

“We sent one of them to Madura. So this car will remain in Madura until the Championship Series round is finished,” added Hanif.

11 Cameras Used

In order to support the need for better match broadcasts, PT LIB has also added several cameras to each stadium.

Especially for Gelora Bangkalan, there will be 11 cameras, two of which are slow motion cameras which will be used to record all the players’ movements on the field.

“Broadcast colleagues have prepared existing cameras and matched them with VAR cameras. In total there are 11 cameras here and this is the second opportunity after the Bali United vs Persib match,” he said.
